Root locus (RL) criteria in control systems are a graphical method used to analyze and design feedback control systems. It allows engineers to visualize how the system’s poles move in the complex plane as a parameter, typically the gain of the system, varies. The root locus diagram depicts the locations of the closed-loop poles as the gain changes from zero to infinity. The criteria provide guidelines for ensuring system stability and performance by examining the RL diagram.

Description

Specifically, the RL criteria state that for a stable closed-loop system, the number of poles of the closed-loop transfer function to the right of any point on the real axis is equal to the number of open-loop poles to the right of that point, plus or minus an odd multiple of 180 degrees. By using RL analysis, engineers can design controllers by placing the closed-loop poles in desired locations to meet specific performance requirements while maintaining stability.
